He had possessed gold that had been obtained corruptly. A liar that framed many instigators of his own kind to get his perfect result. He was an unscrupulous fraud now disguised as a rich and flamboyant emperor. He had got precisely what he had craved. A fancy-suited life without the hard work of gaining it.
The pain of guilt could not confide in the victory he had to yearn. It ran like a sweet river so painfully striking his criminal streak. He could not ignore it and he could not deceive it. It just laid there like a hole waiting to be admitted to be filled.

As he wept for his daughter that had been taken for an exchange of a high ransom worth gold and silver. He too poor in debt to possess such findings. The fragile worth of himself began to fade
The debt what had caused had been more vilely to be told. What he had feared: Outliving his wealth and lingering penance had come true.
He had merely 40,000 francs which were still not enough to satisfy the insatiable desire of the scandalous men who took his precious daughter.
He had made up his mind. A vicious person now felt like an abandoned father. Running away to be; once again a fraudulent wretch. And letting his daughter die a painful death.

It is short but I felt from the man's perspective that his life was fullfilled but happiness was an element he missed yet guilt lived on as lingering penance.
